AND SOME FRUGAL COOKINGWoke up to a heavy frost that was still lingering at 10.30am so dug out the thermal vest (very glam). We have been very lucky with the weather this winter, which has meant we haven't had to use the heating as much. Still I was pleased to see we had used less than half the amount of gas in 2011 than in 2010 even with that terrible price hike. British gas have announced a 5% drop in the price of their electric but not the gas. WHY NOT???? Wholesale prices have dropped but yet again they have another excuse for not lowering the price.
Decided to do some batch cooking and unusual for me a bit of home baking. I can cook quite well but have never done much baking. Made a large batch of spag bol, usually the amount of mince makes 4 x 2 person meals but I added extra veg and stretched it to 5 meals which look and smell just as good. I made it using the last jar of the aldi pasta sauce which was reduced to just 18p it then went back up to 25p and now is 28p, still good value but how prices keep rising.
I had a couple of bananas and a few dates left over ( the dates were a little dry and not nice enough to eat on their own) so I decided to make banana and date muffins. Used an easy banana muffin recipe I found on allrecipes.co.uk , stoned and chopped up the dates and stirred in. I have tried one since I took the photo and it was really moist and tasty. They freeze well so that's handy. Also had a little bit of puff pastry that needed using so cut out in circles and added a little jam, folded over and had little bite sized jam puffs.

Aldi's current super 6 offer ends on Sunday so now is the time to check what you can use over the next week and stock up before the offer ends. I'm looking at tomatoes, onions, carrots and cabbage. I will be able to use all of these and then next week I will be looking at the new offer. This way I stretch the offers over a longer period and get a good selection. I won't be buying the celery or swede as we don't eat them very much and it would be a waste to buy just because they are cheap.

Well i am off to have a wander around the internet to see what other offers there are and plan the menu for next week.

Oh nearly forgot "my shopping transport" coming soon.

Best wishes and happy bargain hunting to all, wanabe frugal
wannabe frugalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16895211719182044010noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-982933476778178162.post-44322020397792859762012-01-11T19:12:00.000+00:002012-01-11T19:12:30.799+00:00DO I HAVE BRAND LOYALTY - NEVER NEVER NEVER!!!

How can you just buy from one store or stick to one brand, this will only cost you money.

Take laundry liquid, when there are no offers about I buy Aldi's own brand and am quite happy with that. But if like today I see a good offer I go for it. Had to go to Morrisons today and always have a little look around and there was their own brand bio at £1.62p for 980mml ( half price). I have tried it before and was happy with results so I have bought it again.

Own brands and cheaper brands are a matter of personal taste and are always worth trying. Some you will like and some not. But do try as it could save you a lot of money.

I actually went into Morrisons for their own brand thin bleach at 29p for a 2 litre bottle. I use some of this to refill the Domestos spray bleach bottle. The best price I ever found for this was £1 for 500ml, now I use the own brand bleach and can refill the bottle 4 times saving £3.71p. does the same jobs for me so I'm happy. You could use a refillable spray bottle but do remember to label it well to avoid accidents.

PART II

Well I tackled my nightmare cupboard today. first emptied the cupboard out and there was bits everywhere, had to wonder how it had all fitted in!! Next I washed all the baskets and I had rounded up some unused boxes from around the house.

While these were drying I began sorting out and getting rid of the rubbish (and there was too much) and putting items back where they belonged but not in this cupboard. I used the lidded box to hold spare items that are not needed very often and put a list on top to save opening everytime. Because I binned so much rubbish I only needed to use this box and one smaller one.
Anyway here is the finished result -

I could have done more if I was going to spend money but the idea was to re-organize with a zero spend which I have succeeded in doing. It's amazing how many useless items I had accumulated which "might come in useful one day" and of course have never used. Just like clothes I think I need to go with the adage that if I havn't used it within 6 monthes then I never will.
Well off to get dinner ready, chicken and mushroom pesto and I think I deserve it!!
This year I am determined to have a major declutter and get my home sorted out once and for all.
We had the loft insulated this winter and everything in there had to be taken out. That turned into a very mucky job as in the depths we found stuff left by previous owners. You hear stories of people finding treasures but in our case it was just dirty broken junk. Some of it must have taken a lot of effort to get up there so why was it just not thrown out with the rubbish. Anyway it is now clear and I don't like keeping things in the loft except maybe Christmas decorations that only come out once an year.
I have started in the kitchen and most of the units were not too bad to clear and organize but the photo above is of my understairs cupboard which has become a dumping ground. It is supposed to be for cleaning items and hoover, ironing board etc. As you can see it has become my nightmare and i am about to tackle it tomorrow which is why I am posting now. I will take photos as I go. Am off upstairs now to look out any unused storage boxes and baskets. I don't want to spend anything on this project and I am sure I have items that are around and can be put to better use.
See you all soon wannabe frugalwannabe frugalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16895211719182044010noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-982933476778178162.post-58012021185118731142012-01-09T16:39:00.000+00:002012-01-09T16:39:42.167+00:00CAN WE LIVE OFF THE STORE CUPBOARD FOR A WEEK??Well the holidays are well and truly over and now we face January. Money is tight what with Christmas and buying a couple of major items for our beautiful grandson. So now we are looking to the next payday and I don't want to go into overdrive.
The menu for this week is all based around what we have in the cupboards, freezer etc. In no particular order here is the menu for the week ahead -

Chicken casserole ( thighs from freezer) + veggies (fridge)

Quiche (freezer) + salad (fridge)

Chicken and mushroom pesto (freezer)

1 piece fish + fishfingers (freezer) + mashed potatoes and peas

2 Different curries + rice

Chicken stirfry (chicken from freezer)

Chilli (freezer) + jacket potato

I was hoping to get through without spending anything but I will need milk and a few veggies and also cat food as Baby doesn't do budgeting! Not too bad.

The bills are all paid and next week I have some vouchers I can use and then it will be PAYDAY.

Back soon wannabe frugal
wannabe frugalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16895211719182044010noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-982933476778178162.post-33224257920541377522012-01-03T18:33:00.000+00:002012-01-03T18:33:43.949+00:00CAN I MAKE A WINTER WARMER MEAL FOR 2 OUT OF THIS?

I have had to amend my menu for this week as I had a burgher left over (one person didn't come to dinner).
Today the weather has been dreadful with high winds and lashing rain so I wanted to make a comfort meal.
Pictured above are the ingredients I used. Since I am trying not to waste anything I needed to use up the burgher so I've added a couple of sausages with potatoes, carrots and green beans and half an onion to maked onion gravy and made the one burgher into two small ones.
To save gas I used my stacking pan for the potatoes with the veg steaming above. Fried the sausages, burghers and onions, made some gravy with gravy granules and a touch of chilli, added to sausages and burghers. Mashed potato is made with semi skimmed mild and a spoonful of plain yoghurt instead of butter.

And here is dinner (sorry not the best picture but I didn't want it to get cold). Costed out at approx 80p for person and no waste.
I have taken the fish finger meal off the menu (just as well - chips twice in a week is a bit naughty!!!!)
Back soon
A lot of people are having a "no spend year" for clothes and I am not sure I can go the whole year without buying anything but I am trying not to fritter money on impluse buys that often end up in the cupboard unworn and wondering why I bought it in the first place.
A couple of years ago i bought one of these at an open air market for a couple of pounds -

Battery powered (solar rechargable batteries of course) it removes bobbles on knitwear and other items. works best on woollen and mixed fibres. And has helped to keep jumpers etc looking good when otherwise I would have not worn them anymore.
So this afternoon I got out all the knitwear, scarves and a couple of coats and checked them over, de-bobbling where needed. I also checked buttons and looked for seams that needed any attention. Shoes and handbags have had a good polish and I sorted some of my costume jewellery into this recycled chocolate box.

The box just seemed to good to throw in the recycling so I removed the label and have used it to house small bits of jewellery. The clear lid means I can see what is inside and it is small enough to fit in a dressing table drawer.
Still a lot to organize but it was a good start for me anyway!!!!
See you all tomorrow
YES YES YES
Well here we are in 2012 and quite handy that it starts on a Sunday. I have been through the fridge, freezer etc to see what I still have to be used before putting my menu for this week together. I don't do it in day order so it can be moved around to suit. And of course if any bargains turn up then items from the freezer can stay there and be used at a later day. So here goes -

Well almost 2012 and I have decided not to make New Year resolutions that I will never be able to keep, instead I am making plans that I am determined to follow in order to reach my goal.

Continue with my £35 a week food/cleaning/pet food budget.

Plan a meal menu for each week with a view to being flexible if a bargain comes along.

Not waste anything - food, clothes etc.

Recycle, repair where ever possible

Keep a small notebook in my bag with lists, measurements of items required for home so no buying without first a check if it is the right thing or size that i need.

Keep monitoring gas and electric comsumption and using only when necessary.

If I can keep to these simple plans then I should be able to reach my goal of being debt free by the end of 2012.
I love handbags and they are my little weakness. Although I have loads i just can't resist. I had to make a promise to myself not to spend on any NEW bags but I still find a bargain from time to time either at boot fairs or charity shops. I bought this little 1960's evening bag in a charity shop today for £1.
This summmer there were so many handbags at the local bootfair that I was spoilt for choice. I did stay strong and only bought at a maximum price of £1, in really good condition, vintage and if I was sure I would use it.
I tend to stick to quite simple clothes, (as I am only 5' tall and a size 10) and ring the changes with bold jewellery and bags. It is sometimes an item that I have found for pennies that attracts the most attention.
Tomorrow i will go through my list of things to do in 2012, if i write them here it will help keep on plan.
bye bye for today wannabe frugalwannabe frugalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16895211719182044010noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-982933476778178162.post-4668373081106040172011-12-26T16:46:00.000+00:002011-12-26T16:46:24.275+00:00DIDN'T MEAN TO BUY BUT I DID!!!!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas Day, now it is Boxing Day and we needed to get out of the house and have some frest air. The weather has been so mild.
Had a brish walk and then O/H discovered that there were newspapers today so we walked back through the town. Amazed how many shops were open as ours is a small town and usually the shops don't open till the 27th. Decided to pop into "The Works" for a quick look see and found this beautiful photo album for 99p. I have some beautiful family photos dating back to late victorian times and have wanted an album for the best of them and this is perfect. I will post the album again when i have filled with some of the photos.
We will have this tomorrow with a salad so not too heavy or rich before Christmas Day.

Went into town for a look around and while in the supermarket picking up a small french stick i ended up at the till behind a lady with piles of shopping, she spent over a hundred pounds and turned to me and said she had already spent £200 there yesterday. I was gobsmacked, to make it worse she said they were not going to be at home for Christmas Day. Over £300 and going to some else for the big day. You have to wonder how much was going to be wasted!!!! £300 would last me for over 2 months.
Hope everyone is ready for the big day and has it all planned as it will make it less stressful.

The bulbs are poking through, the seagulls look like they are pairing up and today a butterfly flitting around the garden. In December!!
The weather today has been glorious, blue skies and sunshine with temperatures in double figures. It seems crazy with Christmas just 3 days away and to top it all a butterfly in the garden.

It's been hard to get in the Christmas mood but the shopping is done and the presents wrapped and I have been very good and not overspent and hopefully will not have any waste after Christmas. Planning in advance has helped to keep the cost down - a list with items ticked off to remind me when i went shopping.
This is my version of BOGOF - These huge gammon steaks are on offer at Aldi down from £1.99 to £1.49 (by now you will have noticed that i am an Aldi girl). They are so large that i will get two meals for two persons from them. I will cut about a third from each and tonight we will have the larger portion with saute potatoes, peas and carrots with cheese sauce. tomorrow will either be penne made with pesto and the remaining ham diced and muchrooms and or a cabonara of if I feel really good a ham and muchroom quiche where there will be enough for lunch the day after. So at least two for one and maybe even three.
Well off to cook now
Best wishes wannabe frugalwannabe frugalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16895211719182044010noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-982933476778178162.post-49602689167217950722011-11-24T17:02:00.000+00:002011-11-24T17:02:22.069+00:0018p - HOW LOW CAN YOU GO?Hi everyone
Only 18p a jar.I thought i would try it out and use instead of tinned tomatoes at 31p a tin. So two jars of sauce instead of two tins tomatoes, one large pack of mince, onion, mushrooms, carrots and green pepper ( had one lurking in the fridge). Added extra garlic, oregano and tomatoe puree and crushed pepper corns for added taste. then into the slow cooker for 3 hours. I have to say it smelt wonderful.

I costed this out and it comes to less than 50p per one person portion. Not too bad. could have been less if I had used more veg to stretch it further but I have to think of O/H who does like his meat.
See you all soon. Best wishes wannabe frugal.
A year ago this little sweetie wandered in to our lives via the french windows.Very thin and scruffy looking. After asking around we found out that he was homeless and although i had said i would not have another cat, he worked his way into my heart. We called him Crybaby now shortened to Baby. I have never known such a vocal cat with the full range of meows. Now a year later he is a nice healthy cat and so affectionate. always purring and loves to be petted. We don't know how old he is but no spring chicken, so at least he now has a good old age to look forward to as we look him dearly. Only i do wish someone would tell him we are supposed to be on a budget. My own fault i have spoilt him but he repays me with so much affection.
We ventured out for a shopping trip yesterday. Yes, we went the frugal route. first stop was a small table fair where i found this little beauty for the massive sum of 20p!!!!! So sweet and i think is from the 1950's, all complete with candles, glass baubles and bells. Reminded me that i have 2 brass reindeer put away that i bought at the local bootfair in the summer. Just got to remember where i tucked them away.

I also went mad and bought these beads etc., all at 20p a piece.

and this little touch of vintage glamour
A pure silk hand rolled edge scarf for £1. Signed in the corner "Thirkell of Old Bond Street". Lovely colour and design. Can't wait to wear it. I buy very few clothes but pretty scarves and beads can change the look of an outfit for very little.

After this we parked the car just outside of the town centre and walked in. Saved £2.20p on car parking!!! A little wander around but all we bought was 3 items in Poundland -

Can of WD - 40. car sponges and a stocking filler book for a 9 year old, at that age they enjoy all those gross out things. And we managed to get 2 boxes of the half price PG Tips teabags in Morrison's.

Then it was back home for a welcome cup of coffee. I felt very virtuous as i managed to stay out of all the clothes shops and didn't feel tempted or that i was missing out.

Well off to hang out the towels in the brilliant sunshine we have today (long may it last).
PRETTY CHEAP - Had to do a bit of shopping in Morrison's last night and they were reducing items. bougth two chicken balti pies and a large stir fry for less than a pound so that's dinner tonight sorted. It was going to be sausage and mash but that will wait for another night. I do a menu each week but try to be flexible when a bargain comes along. We have a strict budget of £35 a week for food, cleaning products and catfood so it has to stretch a long way.

Had the survey and we were eligible. That was back in July and at long last they are coming on Tuesday to do the work.

So this Saturday afternoon we went to clear the loft. Didn't think this would take long as we keep very little up there, just suitcases and boxes with Christmas decorations. O/H takes a light to check that all is clear - air turns blue, in the dark regions of the far end of the loft were old rolls of carpet, sacking with straw, wood etc. old nowspapers dated back to the 1950's. Everthing was filthy and falling apart. By the time we had finished we were filthy dirty and the hall was covered in bits everywhere. Luckily have only stripped the hall ready for decorating so no carpets etc. to worry about.

Looking forward now to the difference it will make to the warm of the house. Being an end of terrace we have a long outside wall which gets no sun so should make a difference.

Will be having slow cooker roast pork and bread and butter pudding for dinner. The smell of the pork is driving our little old adopted cat nuts!!!!

best wishes to all
In the good old days when gas was cheap ( can just about remember...), flick the switch and on it went without a thought. Today, very different, almost scared to put it on as the prices have risen so fast. We are quite lucky here in the south east as it has been quite mild but i am dreading it when it gets colder. Now it is layers of clothes and blankets over the legs in the evening.
I had a great bargain at out local bootfair on sunday. Spotted this quilted bedspread poking out of a bag. Asked the price and was delighted to be offered it for £1.50p. The lady had even had it cleaned. Very warm and a lovely teal colour.
The quilt is a soft cream colour and hand quilted. I know some will think that I shouldn't use it as it is so old but that is what is was made for and I do treat it kindly. So when we are snuggled under all this we stay warm and toastie.wannabe frugalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16895211719182044010noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-982933476778178162.post-72357648905704863022011-10-26T13:05:00.000+01:002011-10-26T13:05:14.365+01:00so here I amI am taking baby steps to get the best I can for my family and make our budget stretch as far as i can. i have learnt a lot from some other blogs and here i am to show what i am doing and would love others comments and tips as i still have so much to learn. To me being frugal means getting the most you can out of your resources and still having a good and enjoyable life. There are some things that i know would make me unhappy to give up and it would be silly of me to try.wannabe frugalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16895211719182044010noreply@blogger.com0
